The first public milestone is not the start date
The February 2022 community update confirms work in progress. Reading it as “development began in February 2022” changes the meaning: an announcement about existing work does not date its beginning. Concept work, pre-production and full production can also have different starting points.
A duration needs both endpoints and a definition. Time since the first public confirmation can be calculated, but it should not be labeled the entire development cycle. Likewise, the gap between two GTA releases includes whatever happened between them; it does not prove that every year was spent in full production on the next game.
A timeline from Rockstar’s own publications
These are dated communication milestones. Each answers a different question about the public record. They do not disclose internal staffing totals or a month-by-month production schedule.
| Date | Primary publication | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| February 4, 2022 | GTA community update | Active development was already underway |
| July 7, 2022 | GTA and Red Dead Online community update | Rockstar described shifting more development resources toward the next entry |
| December 4, 2023 | Official Trailer 1 page | The first numbered GTA VI trailer’s publication date |
| October 5, 2026 review | Current GTA VI product page | The currently listed console launch date is November 19, 2026 |
Why is GTA 6 taking so long?
The July 2022 update documents a resource shift and the studio’s stated ambition for the next entry. It does not quantify how much time individual features required or identify a single cause for the whole schedule. A precise explanation would need production evidence, not just a long wait.
Claims that one engine, one person or one gameplay feature caused every delay go beyond these sources. A revised launch date is a schedule fact; an explanation of why the date moved requires its own supporting statement. Keep those two kinds of information separate when discussing the timeline.
How to compare timeline claims
Ask which phase the author is counting, where the starting date comes from and whether the end date is an actual release or a planned one. A headline promising an exact number may quietly combine an estimated start with a scheduled finish.
For a practical comparison, make a two-column note: confirmed public milestone and proposed internal milestone. Put the February announcement in the first column. Leave any unsupported production start in the second with its attribution. This lets you discuss the evidence without turning a rumor into a date.
Use the release-date guide for current launch planning and the story guide for completion-time questions. Development time, time until launch and hours needed to finish the game are three separate measurements.
Questions, answered.
Did GTA 6 development start in 2022?
The February 4, 2022 announcement says active development was already underway. It does not say that development began on that date.
When did the first GTA 6 trailer appear?
Rockstar’s official Trailer 1 page dates it December 4, 2023. That is a reveal milestone, not the project start date.
Can we calculate the full development duration?
Not from these publications alone. A precise duration requires a verified beginning, endpoint and definition of the development phase.
